The "N" stands for Nitrogen. By strategically alloying Type 304 stainless steel with 0.10% to 0.16% Nitrogen, metallurgists significantly increase the material's yield and tensile strength through solid solution strengthening, without reducing its ductility.
Actually, it improves it. In addition to boosting mechanical strength, the dissolved nitrogen enhances the steel's resistance to localized corrosion, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion, making it slightly more robust in wet or chemical environments than standard Grade 8.
Engineers specify Grade 8N (Type 304N) for applications that demand higher design stresses or where weight reduction is a priority. It provides a higher strength-to-weight ratio while maintaining the classic oxidation and corrosion resistance of standard 18/8 stainless steel.
