The "105" represents the minimum yield strength requirement of the anchor bolt in thousands of pounds per square inch (ksi). As verified on the MTC, these bolts are guaranteed to withstand at least 105,000 psi (724 MPa) of yield stress, making them ideal for heavy structural anchoring and foundation supports.
Unlike Grade 36 or Grade 55 (which have specific weldable supplements), Grade 105 is a quenched and tempered alloy steel with a relatively high carbon and alloy content. Because of the heat treatment required to achieve its high strength, welding is generally not recommended, as the heat from welding will destroy the mechanical properties in the heat-affected zone.
Yes, Grade 105 anchor bolts can be hot-dip galvanized. However, because they are a high-strength heat-treated steel, special care must be taken to avoid hydrogen embrittlement. They should ideally be mechanically cleaned rather than acid pickled before the galvanizing process.
