What's Inside This A490 MTC Certificate

This sample mill test certificate mirrors the QA documentation package required for high-strength A490 structural bolts, engineered for heavy-duty steel construction applications where extreme tension is vital.

  • Full Traceability: Certified with TC No.: S490/26-XX and corresponding ASTM F3125 specifications.
  • Quenched & Tempered Alloy Chemistry: Detailed breakdowns verifying the alloy composition (typically Cr-Mo or Ni-Cr-Mo) designed to achieve the high strength required for structural joints.
  • High-Strength Performance: Explicit verification of minimum tensile strength (1035-1205 MPa depending on diameter) and hardness requirements (33-39 HRC).
  • Hydrogen De-embrittlement (HDE): Documentation verifying that the bolts have undergone necessary treatment to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking, which is a critical risk at this hardness level.
  • Quality Compliance: 100% visual inspection carried out and verified free from manufacturing defects.

Technical FAQs — A490 Structural Bolts

What is ASTM F3125?

ASTM F3125 is the current "master" standard that consolidated and replaced several previous structural bolt specifications, including the old ASTM A325 and ASTM A490. Any bolt formerly called an "A490 bolt" is now governed under ASTM F3125 as Grade A490.

Why are A490 bolts restricted in surface coatings?

Due to their high hardness levels (33-39 HRC), A490 bolts are sensitive to Hydrogen Embrittlement. Hot-dip galvanizing or electroplating can introduce hydrogen into the steel, potentially causing catastrophic failure. As a result, A490 bolts are usually restricted to specific types of corrosion protection (like zinc flake coatings) that have been proven to minimize hydrogen uptake.

Can A490 bolts be reused?

No. ASTM A490 bolts are high-strength structural bolts designed for installation in tension. They are considered single-use fasteners. Once they have been fully tightened and reached their design tension, they should not be loosened and re-tightened, nor should they be reused in new connections.
