The primary advantage of Grade 431 is its high mechanical strength and hardness, which can be tailored through heat treatment (hardening and tempering). While austenitic grades (304/316) offer excellent corrosion resistance, they cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Grade 431 bridges this gap, offering the highest corrosion resistance among the martensitic 400-series combined with outstanding tensile strength and toughness.
Unlike standard martensitic grades like 410 or 420, Grade 431 includes a specified Nickel addition of 1.25% to 2.50%. As verified in the MTC's chemistry table, this nickel significantly enhances the alloy's toughness and substantially improves its corrosion resistance, especially in marine and industrial environments.
Because of its unique combination of high tensile strength, good toughness, and excellent martensitic corrosion resistance, Grade 431 is highly sought after for demanding structural applications. Common uses include marine hardware, pump and valve shafts, aircraft components, heavily stressed structural fasteners, and offshore rigging equipment.
