Nickel-based superalloys exhibit a naturally high coefficient of friction and a severe propensity to gall (cold weld) when threaded surfaces slide against one another under heavy compressive loads. To proactively counteract galling and achieve an accurate, highly predictable tension-to-torque relationship, the application of engineered anti-seize lubricants—typically non-metallic, high-temperature nickel-compatible pastes—is functionally mandatory during assembly. Proper lubrication ensures that the applied rotational force efficiently converts into direct longitudinal clamp load.
Featuring an elevated Chromium content (~22%), Hastelloy C22 provides highest-in-class resistance to localized corrosion, meaning that inside the tight thread pitches of a nut and bolt assembly, the alloy completely resists the onset of crevice corrosion and pitting, even in stagnant seawater and hot brine solutions.
