■ Chemical Composition of Alloy 718

Inconel 718 derives its immense strength from a combination of Niobium (Nb), Titanium (Ti), and Aluminum (Al) combining with Nickel during the precipitation-hardening (age-hardening) heat treatment process.

Ni (Nickel) Cr (Chromium) Fe (Iron) Nb + Ta (Niobium) Mo (Molybdenum) Ti (Titanium) Al (Aluminum) C (Carbon)
50.0 - 55.0% 17.0 - 21.0% Balance 4.75 - 5.50% 2.80 - 3.30% 0.65 - 1.15% 0.20 - 0.80% 0.08% Max

■ Mechanical & Physical Properties (Age-Hardened)

Note: Properties represent typical minimums for age-hardened material as per ASTM B637.

■ Torque & Installation Guidelines (UNC Threads)

To proactively counteract galling and achieve an accurate, highly predictable tension-to-torque relationship, the application of engineered high-temperature nickel-compatible anti-seize lubricants is functionally mandatory during assembly. (Note: Torque values reflect the ultra-high yield strength of age-hardened Alloy 718).

Nominal Diameter Threads Per Inch (UNC) Target Torque – Dry (ft-lbs) Target Torque – Lubricated (ft-lbs)
1/2" 13 133.0 100.0
5/8" 11 264.0 198.0
3/4" 10 468.0 351.0
1" 8 1136.0 852.0

■ Key Characteristics & Applications

Inconel 718 is arguably the most widely used precipitation-hardened nickel alloy. In addition to high mechanical strength, it exhibits excellent weldability and is highly resistant to post-weld cracking. It maintains outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide variety of severe environments.

  • Oil & Gas Exploration: Downhole tooling, wellhead components, blow-out preventers (BOP), and gate valves (often manufactured to API 6A / NACE MR0175 standards).
  • Aerospace & Defense: Jet engine components, rocket motors, spacecraft structural hardware, and gas turbine blading.
  • Cryogenics: Highly ductile and tough at cryogenic temperatures, making it ideal for liquid fuel and cryogenic storage fasteners.
  • Nuclear Reactors: Core components and pump shafts subjected to intense mechanical stress and pure water corrosion.
Engineering Note & Quality Assurance: Because Inconel 718 achieves its properties via precipitation hardening, heat-treatment lot control is critical. All Ananka Fasteners are supplied with fully traceable EN 10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificates (MTC) detailing precise heat treatment cycles and resulting mechanical properties.
