Ananka Fasteners is a premier manufacturer and global exporter of Monel R-405 Fasteners (UNS N04405), a highly specialized, solid-solution strengthened nickel-copper superalloy. Operating fundamentally as the free-machining modification of Monel 400, this alloy was engineered to overcome the profound manufacturing challenges inherently associated with machining high-strength, heavily work-hardening nickel alloys for high-volume fastener production.
The defining metallurgical feature of UNS N04405 is the precisely controlled addition of sulfur (0.025% - 0.060%). This promotes the formation of microscopic nickel-copper sulfide inclusions that act as mechanical discontinuities, ensuring metal chips break cleanly during automated CNC turning and threading. This drastically improves machinability while maintaining the phenomenal corrosion resistance of the base nickel-copper matrix in marine environments, de-aerated hydrofluoric acid, and sulfuric acid.
Every Monel R-405 fastener manufactured by Ananka is produced from premium cold-drawn bar stock to maximize yield strength prior to precision machining. All supplies are backed by EN 10204 Type 3.1 Material Test Certificates and full compliance with ASTM F468. Critical Note: Due to the sulfur content, Monel R-405 is highly susceptible to solidification cracking and is strictly prohibited for welding applications; it is exclusively specified for mechanically joined (threaded) applications.

The alloy relies on a high-nickel matrix, heavily alloyed with copper. The specific addition of sulfur dictates its machinability, while manganese is carefully calibrated to scavenge free sulfur and prevent intergranular embrittlement.

Monel R-405 cannot be hardened through heat treatment. Its mechanical strength is derived entirely from solid-solution strengthening combined with strain hardening (cold working) imparted during the manufacturing of the raw bar stock.
| Material Condition | Ultimate Tensile Strength | Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) | Elongation | Rockwell Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed | 70 – 85 ksi (482 – 586 MPa) | 25 – 40 ksi (172 – 275 MPa) | 50% – 35% | 60 – 76 HRB |

For high-performance threaded fasteners, cold-drawn bar stock serves as the mandatory starting material because it provides the required tensile strength to withstand high torque preloads. Despite this heavy work-hardening, the FCC matrix ensures extreme toughness, maintaining a formidable Izod impact strength of 140 ft-lbs in the cold-drawn state and resisting brittle fracture completely.

While significantly easier to machine than Monel 400, R-405 is still a superalloy that rapidly work-hardens and possesses low thermal conductivity. Friction heat concentrates intensely at the cutting edge.

Every lot of Monel R-405 fasteners shipped by Ananka is accompanied by a highly detailed EN 10204 Type 3.1 Manufacturer Test Certificate (MTC), ensuring absolute metallurgical pedigree traceable back to the originating mill.
Each MTC documents:
Both alloys share nearly identical chemical compositions and corrosion resistance. The difference is the deliberate addition of sulfur (0.025-0.060%) in R-405, which creates sulfide inclusions that act as mechanical chip breakers. This makes R-405 vastly easier to machine for high-volume fastener production.
Absolutely NOT. The sulfur content that makes R-405 easy to machine also makes it highly susceptible to solidification cracking (hot shortness) during welding. The low-melting-point nickel-sulfides cause the grain boundaries to pull apart as the weld cools. R-405 is strictly for mechanically joined applications.
It is generally considered "slightly magnetic." The Curie temperature of Monel R-405 ranges from 21°C to 49°C (70°F to 120°F), which intersects with standard room temperatures. If absolute non-magnetic properties are required (e.g., for MRI or minesweeping), specific testing of the batch is mandatory.
Monel R-405 is a solid-solution alloy and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Its strength comes entirely from its base chemistry and the strain hardening (cold working) applied during the drawing of the raw bar stock. Cold-drawing can elevate the yield strength from 25 ksi up to 105 ksi.
They are ideal for high-volume machined hardware used in highly corrosive environments where welding will never be required. Key applications include submerged naval piping, hydrofluoric acid alkylation units, and critical offshore brine heaters where resistance to chloride SCC is paramount.
