Titanium is added to 321 stainless steel to stabilize the carbide structure. By adding Titanium at a minimum of 5x the carbon content, we prevent the formation of chromium carbides, which would otherwise lead to intergranular corrosion at high temperatures.
SS321 is ideal for service in the sensitization range of 427°C to 816°C. The Titanium addition allows it to maintain its structural integrity and corrosion resistance where standard 304 or 316 might suffer.
