The "S" in 309S denotes a lower maximum carbon content limit (0.08% max compared to 0.20% max in standard 309). This chemical restriction, verified in the MTC, minimizes carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries. This prevents sensitization and intergranular corrosion, making 309S highly suitable for applications involving extensive welding or prolonged heating.
EN 1.4833 (often referenced as X12CrNi23-13) is the European equivalent to ASTM Grade 309S. Both standards demand very similar high-alloy chemistry designed for elevated temperature performance. Our MTC confirms that the chromium, nickel, and carbon levels fall perfectly within the intersecting allowances of both the ASTM A276/A479 UNS S30908 and EN 1.4833 standards.
Because of its high 23% chromium and 13.5% nickel content verified on the MTC, Stainless Steel 309S exhibits superb resistance to oxidation and scaling. It is typically rated for continuous service at temperatures up to 1038°C (1900°F) in non-fluctuating environments, making it ideal for furnace parts, boiler baffles, and exhaust system hardware.
