What's Inside This SS 317/317L MTC Certificate

This sample mill test certificate mirrors the rigorous QA documentation package standard for high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel orders designed for severe corrosive environments, shipped from Ananka Fasteners Pvt Ltd.

  • Full Traceability: Certified with TC No.: S128/26-XX and corresponding ASTM / EN specifications to ensure seamless part-tracking.
  • High-Molybdenum Chemistry: Detailed breakdowns verifying the significantly elevated Molybdenum content (3.00% - 4.00%). This provides vastly superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in harsh chloride environments compared to standard 304 or 316 grades.
  • Dual Certification Potential (317 / 317L): Explicit verification of carbon content. While standard 317 allows up to 0.08% max carbon, 317L restricts carbon to 0.03% max to prevent intergranular sensitization during heavy welding. Materials falling below 0.03% carbon can be dual-certified.
  • Mechanical Properties: Comprehensive reporting of Tensile Strength (Min 515 MPa), Yield Strength (Min 205 MPa), Elongation (Min 40%), and Hardness (Max 95 HRB).
  • Quality Compliance: 100% visual inspection carried out and verified free from defects and radioactive contamination.

Technical FAQs — Stainless Steel 317 & 317L MTC Certificate

Why choose 317/317L over standard 316/316L Stainless Steel?

The primary advantage of 317 and 317L is their significantly higher Molybdenum content. While 316L typically contains 2.0% - 3.0% Molybdenum, Types 317 and 317L are mandated to have between 3.0% and 4.0% Molybdenum, as verified in this MTC. This elevated level, along with slightly higher Chromium and Nickel, provides vastly superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in harsh, highly acidic, and chloride-bearing environments.

What does the "L" signify in 317L and how does it affect dual certification?

The "L" designates a Low Carbon variant, meaning the carbon content is strictly capped at a maximum of 0.03%. Standard 317 allows up to 0.08% carbon. Keeping carbon ultra-low prevents chromium carbide precipitation (sensitization) during heavy welding processes, preserving the alloy's corrosion resistance. If a heat of steel yields less than 0.03% carbon, it fulfills the requirements for both 317 and 317L, resulting in a "dual-certified" MTC like the one shown above.

What are the typical industrial applications for fasteners certified to 317/317L?

Due to its exceptional resistance to sulfuric acid, acidic chlorine environments, and severe pitting, 317/317L is the material of choice for highly corrosive sectors. Common applications include flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, chemical and petrochemical processing equipment, pulp and paper manufacturing, textile processing, and heavy marine environments.
