Type 416 is purposefully alloyed with a higher Sulfur content (typically 0.15% minimum, as shown on the MTC). During machining, these sulfur inclusions act as internal chip-breakers, which allows the tool to cut more easily, reduces friction and tool wear, and facilitates high-speed, automated production on screw machines and CNC equipment.
