How does the high Sulfur content enable "Free-Machining"?

Type 416 is purposefully alloyed with a higher Sulfur content (typically 0.15% minimum, as shown on the MTC). During machining, these sulfur inclusions act as internal chip-breakers, which allows the tool to cut more easily, reduces friction and tool wear, and facilitates high-speed, automated production on screw machines and CNC equipment.

Is there a trade-off for the improved machinability?

Yes. The same sulfur additions that make Type 416 incredibly easy to machine also slightly reduce its corrosion resistance, weldability, and formability compared to non-free-machining grades like Type 410. This is why Type 416 is best suited for applications where machining productivity is a priority over severe corrosion exposure.
