Standard C51000 Phosphor Bronze offers high strength and fatigue resistance but is very difficult to machine. C54400 is modified by adding approximately 4% Lead and 3% Zinc. The Lead acts as a chip-breaker and internal lubricant, giving C54400 an outstanding machinability rating of 80% (compared to C51000's 20%), making it the go-to alloy for complex, CNC-turned bronze fasteners.
The same dispersed Lead particles that make the alloy easy to machine also provide excellent anti-friction properties in service. When a C54400 fastener is subjected to heavy loads or dynamic movement against another metal surface, it resists galling and wear far better than standard brass or steel, acting similarly to a lubricated bearing.
Yes. Because UNS C54400 contains a significant amount of Lead (3.5% - 4.5%), it does not meet the "Lead-Free" requirements mandated for modern potable (drinking) water systems. Its use is restricted to industrial, marine, aerospace, and heavy machinery applications where water toxicity is not a factor.
