Both grades are martensitic stainless steels (equivalent to the 400 series, typically 410 SS). However, Grade 6F is the "Free-Machining" variant (similar to 416 SS). Grade 6F incorporates a higher minimum addition of Sulfur or Selenium (0.15% min), which breaks up chips during the machining process, allowing for faster and cleaner threading, though it slightly reduces overall corrosion resistance compared to Grade 6.
Martensitic stainless steels can be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve significantly higher hardness and mechanical strength than standard austenitic stainless steels (like 304 or 316). Grade 6 and 6F are chosen when an application requires a combination of high tensile strength, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance in hot environments.
The MTC logs a Quench and Temper phase. ASTM A194 strictly mandates that Grade 6 and 6F nuts be heated to the proper austenitizing temperature, quenched in a liquid medium, and then tempered at a minimum of 1100°F (595°C). This specific tempering minimum ensures the material retains high strength while restoring enough ductility to prevent brittle failure under stress.
