Grade 8T is manufactured from AISI Type 321 Austenitic Stainless Steel. This specific alloy is fundamentally similar to standard Type 304 (18/8) stainless steel but features a strategic addition of Titanium (at least 5 times the carbon content). This makes it highly resistant to intergranular corrosion after extended exposure to elevated temperatures.
When standard austenitic stainless steels (like Grade 8) are exposed to high temperatures (800°F - 1500°F), chromium carbides can precipitate at the grain boundaries, leading to "sensitization" and subsequent corrosion cracking. The Titanium in Grade 8T has a higher affinity for carbon than chromium does; it binds with the carbon, leaving the chromium fully intact in the alloy matrix to maintain its protective oxide layer.
Both Grade 8T (Type 321) and Grade 8C (Type 347) are stabilized austenitic stainless steels designed to resist carbide precipitation at high temperatures. The difference lies entirely in the stabilizing element: Grade 8T uses Titanium, whereas Grade 8C uses Columbium (Niobium) and Tantalum. They perform similarly in most high-heat applications, such as exhaust systems and heavy refinery equipment.
