ASTM A240 Type 304 is stainless steel plates, sheets, and strip offered for corrosion resistant applications generally but especially where there is a requirement to have resistance to corrosion at elevated temperatures. Type 304 is one of the more broadly applied grades of austenitic stainless steels because of versatility of properties and applications. It is used in types of industries like food processing, chemical processing, construction, and automotive manufacturing.
ASTM A240 Type 304: Composition and Characteristics
This grade of stainless steel is mainly composed of chromium (18-20%) and nickel (8-10.5%), with trace amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon, and other elements. The type is considered to provide an excellent balance between corrosion resistance, strength, and workability. Sometimes, this type of stainless steel is more reckoned as “18/8” stainless steel due to its high levels of chromium and nickel.
Advantages of ASTM A240 Type 304 Stainless Steel:
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Due to high chromium and nickel content, Type 304 offers excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, particularly in mild to moderately aggressive environments, so is very often used for applications in moist conditions, contact with chemicals or atmosphere.
Good Formability and Weldability: Since Type 304 provides an excellent level of ductility, it can easily be formed into numerous shapes and products. It further offers the characteristic of good weldability so that many parts can be joined without losing its corrosion resistance.
Versatility: This grade is found to be suitable for many applications in kitchen equipment, tanks, piping systems, and architectural components primarily due to the balanced distribution of mechanical properties with ease in fabrication.
Temperature Resistance: Type 304 stainless steel maintains its mechanical properties up to about 870°C (1600°F), and hence is used for moderate high-temperature applications.
