COMPREHENSIVE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS AND DATASHEET OF HASTELLOY C-2000 (UNS N06200) FASTENING SYSTEMS

Hastelloy C-2000 (officially designated as UNS N06200) represents a metallurgical breakthrough in the highly esteemed "C-type" nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy family. By intentionally adding Copper (1.6%) to the standard high-chromium and high-molybdenum matrix, C-2000 bridges the gap between alloys that are highly resistant to oxidizing media (like C-22) and those exceptionally resistant to reducing media (like B-2 or B-3).

This deliberate alloying strategy results in the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloy on the market. It exhibits outstanding resistance to sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, while its 23% chromium content provides near-immunity to oxidizing chemicals containing ferric ions, cupric ions, and dissolved oxygen. It is the premier fastening solution for multi-purpose chemical processing equipment where process streams frequently change between oxidizing and reducing conditions.

■ Chemical Composition (UNS N06200)

C-2000 utilizes the highly successful foundation of C-276 and C-22 but introduces Copper to significantly expand its resistance to reducing acids like sulfuric and hydrofluoric, without sacrificing chloride resistance.

Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Moly (Mo) Copper (Cu) Iron (Fe) Manganese (Mn) Carbon (C)
Balance (~59.0%) 22.0 – 24.0 15.0 – 17.0 1.30 – 1.90 3.00 Max 0.50 Max 0.01 Max

*Silicon (0.08 Max) and Carbon are kept extremely low to prevent weld-decay and intergranular attack. Aluminum (0.50 Max) is also tightly controlled.

■ Mechanical Properties

In the solution-annealed condition, C-2000 offers excellent ductility and toughness combined with mechanical strength that significantly outperforms standard austenitic stainless steels.

Property Solution Annealed Condition (Typical Minimums)
Tensile Strength (Min) 100 ksi (690 MPa)
Yield Strength (0.2% Offset, Min) 45 ksi (310 MPa)
Elongation in 2" (Min) 45%
Hardness (Typical) ~90 HRB

■ Corrosion Resistance Profile

Hastelloy C-2000 is often selected when the exact nature of the corrosive fluid is unpredictable, fluctuating, or mixed:

  • Broad-Spectrum Acid Resistance: Exceptional performance across all concentrations of sulfuric acid, as well as excellent resistance to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids.
  • Oxidizing Media: High Chromium (23%) provides immunity to oxidizing contaminants (ferric/cupric ions, dissolved oxygen) that would rapidly degrade other Ni-Mo alloys like B-2 or B-3.
  • Chloride Pitting & SCC: A Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) exceeding 70, combined with a high Nickel base, makes it virtually immune to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting.

■ Applications & Industries

C-2000 is specified in industries where equipment downtime is unacceptably costly or dangerous:

  • Multi-Purpose Chemical Processing: Reactors, columns, and heat exchanger bolting in batch processing plants where chemicals alternate daily between oxidizing and reducing media.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Clean-room reactor fastening where severe halogenated solvents and acid catalysts are employed.
  • Pollution Control (FGD): Scrubber ductwork, dampers, and fasteners exposed to highly acidic, chloride-rich flue gases.
  • Metal Processing: Fastening systems for acid pickling lines and waste acid recovery systems.

■ Compatible Fastener Assemblies

To avoid galvanic corrosion in highly conductive, multi-acid electrolytes, Hastelloy C-2000 components must strictly be mated with identical C-2000 hardware.

■ Torque & Installation Guidelines

Due to its high nickel-chromium matrix, C-2000 is extremely susceptible to thread galling (cold-welding). The application of premium, chemically compatible anti-seize paste is strictly mandatory.

Nominal Diameter Threads Per Inch (UNC) Target Torque — Lubricated (ft-lbs)
1/2"1345 - 55
5/8"1190 - 110
3/4"10150 - 180
1"8360 - 410
Galling Warning: Fasteners should be tightened at slow, steady speeds. High-RPM impact wrenches generate localized heat that can cause immediate thread cold-welding (galling) in high-nickel alloys like C-2000.

■ Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does C-2000 differ from C-276 and C-22?

While C-276 is the legacy standard and C-22 is highly optimized for oxidizing acids, C-2000 adds 1.6% Copper. This Copper addition massively increases its resistance to reducing acids (like sulfuric and hydrofluoric) while its 23% Chromium maintains excellent resistance to oxidizing acids. It is considered the most "all-around" versatile alloy of the C-family.

2. Does Hastelloy C-2000 suffer from intergranular corrosion after welding?

No. C-2000 is intentionally formulated with ultra-low carbon (0.01% Max) and silicon. This prevents the formation of grain boundary carbide precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ), meaning fasteners and fabricated components maintain their full corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition.

3. Is C-2000 magnetic?

No. Due to its face-centered cubic austenitic structure, C-2000 remains completely non-magnetic regardless of ambient or operating temperatures.

4. What are the temperature limits for Alloy C-2000?

While it resists oxidation effectively, C-2000 is primarily used for aqueous (liquid) corrosion resistance up to approximately 800°F (427°C). For continuous high-temperature structural use, alloys designed specifically for creep resistance (like Nimonic or Inconel 718) are generally specified.
